It's My First Time Behind The Wheel

It's #FreshMusicFridayTB and this is as fresh as today's headlines. This will certainly be added to my ongoing album It's my First Pandemic, but for now, enjoy this first run through. "My first path was dirty and it gradually got gritty, but the gravel as I traveled smoothed away... But now I feel, it's my first time behind the wheel."

TIPS FOR TODD

My Roots (2015)

Tell me about a song that takes you back. Back in time. Back home.
#OldMusicMondayTB

I wrote this 15 years ago or so. My Grandpa Eston Riley Kimble grew up on his family farm in Pendleton County WV, near Seneca Rocks. If I'm remembering correctly, the farm sat on the other side of this beautiful landmark, just down the road a piece.

The food and the people were whole.

There was a party line that connected more than a couple families, possibly the entire community? Pendleton County is the fifth least populated county in WV. While I was driving through, back in 2015 from one show to the next, I played my song near the rocks. It meant a lot to me.

Speaking of things that mean a lot to me, I sincerely appreciate the virtual tips you are throwing into my tip jar here. www.toddburge.com . You are keeping my music going, "from the Seneca Rocks, to the beginning of all time, my roots have covered my behind"

Love
Todd

Out There And At It (2012)

#OldMusicMondayTB
Channeling my Roger Miller on this one. The year was 2012 and the album was Building Characters. Don Dixon played bass and he also recorded and produced the album, bringing his mobile studio from Ohio to Nashville and setting up in Tim O'Brien's music room. Kenny Malone plays percussion on the entire album. I set my camera behind my head for this one shot and glad I did as it brings back sweet memories for me. I later did the whistling and Tim added the Nugget mandolin.

Thanks so much for listening and sharing and tipping me while I cannot be out there and at it. https://www.paypal.me/toddburge
It really is making a difference. I hope you all are well.
Love,
Todd

Cradle by Todd Burge May 14 2020
In the cradle of your arms
I once found
A safe place to sleep
I imagine it still there
Saving my place
For when again we meet
As I try to kill
The thought…
Of all the days
I did not….
Give
And breathe a little bit of life
Into this time
I’ve got left to
Live
In the recess of my mind
I see time
Taking a day off
On a monkey bar I climb
And here I stay
Like it or not
As I try to kill off
The thought…
Of all the days
I did not….
Live
And breathe a little bit of life
Into this time
I’ve got left to
Give

Full Time Empty Thoughts

Tom Brokaw was in the news lately and it reminded me of this old song I wrote just before I met my wife Lisa. So lonesome.

Cairo by Todd Burge

I wrote this song about Cairo WV at the request of Lissa Lucas. The lyrics are based on stories she told me as well as an obit she sent me from a relative of hers that I believe passed away over 100 years ago. “ simply haul away all that is mortal of me” was from that obit. This was recorded by documentarian Richard Anderson. You may know his work if you watched Here’s to the Working Man, the documentary about West Virginia Folk singer legend Mike Morningstar. This song might make it into an upcoming documentary of Richard’s that will focus on how our natural resources here in WV have been squandered by big business for decades.
